We finished off January with a fun little get away at the Union Station Hotel in Nashville, TN. I’ve been having to travel to Vanderbilt Hospital quarterly for treatment for a voice condition called spasmodic dysphonia. (That’s another story for another day.) When we were there in the fall, another patient warned us that the treatment schedule is so tight that it can be hard to get a make-up appointment if you have to cancel for difficulty traveling due winter weather. Ben and I immediately agreed that this sounded like a perfect reason to plan a Nashville night away for my January appointment. Considering we got quite a lot of snow the week of my appointment, it turned out to be a prudent plan.

If you’ve read about our trip to Maine and recent adventure to the Opryland Hotel, you’ll know that my husband Ben has been on a little bit of a credit card travel points hacking kick. I love to travel and also love a discount, so I’m more than happy to encourage him in his research. Before our trip to Maine, Ben opened a Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card, which came with a sign on bonus of 3 free nights. We used our first night when we arrived in Portland, ME after a late light flight. We used our second night for our end of Christmas to stay at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel.
Knowing we had one more free night, Ben got to work looking for a Marriott property to visit. He struck absolute gold with the Union Station Hotel in Nashville.
I have a special love for beautiful old buildings, especially gothic architecture, so the Union Station Hotel in Nashville was total eye candy for me. Even if you aren’t staying at the hotel, the lobby itself is a vision to behold. Our visit was made extra special by an upgrade to a full suite, thanks to our kind concierge.
We arrived in Nashville around dinner time. Instead of braving the frigid night air from a recent arctic blast, we decided to stay put and enjoy dinner in the hotel restaurant Stationary. The restaurant is located in what was once the entrance to the train station. It was the prefect spot to sit back and take some of the beautiful details of the building. I’m a huge fan of roasted Brussels sprouts. If they are on a menu, I’m trying them. I can honestly report that the Brussel sprouts at Stationary are some of my favorites to date. Random, I know, but try them. You can thank me later.
The Union Station Hotel in Nashville originally opened in 1900 as a station for the L & N Railroad. In its heyday, Al Capone passed through its holding station on the way to the Georgia penitentiary. For a time, the track level had two ponds where alligators were kept to amuse waiting passengers. With the decline of rail travel the station fell into disrepair, but was saved from demolition and designated as a national land mark in 1977. The station was fully restored in 2007.
If you happen to be passing through Nashville, I highly recommend a visit to The Union Hotel in Nashville. The lobby is a feast for the eyes and our room was extremely comfortable. I know that Nashville restaurant scene has a lot to offer, but you also can’t go wrong with a visit to the Stationary. Want to enjoy staying at this Marriott property (and others) for free? Continue signing up for the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card. It has certainly served us well this year!
We will be making quarterly visits to Nashville in the future. We welcome any and all recommendations, specifically for restaurants as it’s usually a day trip. But if there’s someplace else we should stay, drop your recommendations in the comments section of this post!
