My first official session of 2023 was newborn photography near Chattanooga, one of my favorite types of sessions! I captured a maternity session for this couple in the fall. There is something so beautiful about watching a couple transition from the excitement of anticipation to the fierce love of their new child! I will say, this Mama also struck me as a complete natural! I remember feeling like all thumbs with my first helpless little newborn. Even with the background of a medical professional, it still shocked me the way that they have seriously no head control! I know I was awkward. In contrast, this mama’s hands were so sure and posing her was a breeze.

Some photographers will insist that newborn photography sessions must take place in the 1st week of life. I’m not big into super bendy, unnatural poses and therefore don’t place a strict timeline. This session took place when this sweet newborn was exactly 2-weeks-old. I anticipated that he would be wide away for our session. 2-week-old infants tend to be much more alert, and hungry. This simply meant he required a little more attention and time. I personally enjoyed getting extra snuggles while rocking and calming him. I was no match for his mama, though! He certainly knew the difference; it was evident. One perk of photographing slightly older newborns is getting to see their sweet open eyes.

I love how this session came together! When I first consulted with this mom-to-be, she joked that their entire house was white. I knew immediately their home would prove an ideal setting for my style of photography. Her white dress paired with small pops of color from the decor and her husband’s wardrobe made for a dreamy, light newborn photography session. See some of my favorites from their session below.
